McKissack & McKissack is an outgrowth of the oldest minority-owned architecture/engineering firm in the United States.
Its roots go back to before the Civil War, when a slave named Moses McKissack learned the building trade from his overseer. It was his grandson, Moses III, who launched the first McKissack & McKissack in Nashville, Tennessee. The year was 1905.
McKissack & McKissack was founded by Deryl McKissack in 1990. When Ms. McKissack established her company, she was the fifth generation of her family to carry on the building tradition.
2018
In anticipation of the delivery of a decommissioned presidential Marine One helicopter, the George H.W. Bush Library Foundation commissions McKissack to design a pavilion to house the aircraft, associated exhibit space, and a dining and reception venue. The Foundation then expanded McKissack’s scope to include other pavilions on the campus.
2019
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is undertaking a complete interior and exterior renovation of an existing 230,000 SF concrete frame, high-rise structure to house their new headquarters facility. McKissack is providing WMATA with interior design, programming and furniture procurement services for the new headquarters facility.
2019
Mckissack provides architectural and community outreach services to Pepco’s Capital Grid Project, designed to improve power reliability by providing a resilient 230kV transmission network that will keep pace with increased energy demands. McKissack’s work will enhance reliability and sustainability as well as increase electric system redundancy.
