Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was recently honored with a 2015 Liberty Mutual Gold Safety Award for an outstanding safety record in the construction of new schools and modernization of existing school sites. Since 2010, McKissack & McKissack has led the administration of the LAUSD Safety Program. In this role, the firm is providing professional oversight, technical guidance, training, and support to project management personnel for the implementation of this program. As a result of maintaining the safety of those who work on LAUSD’s construction projects, the district’s exceptional safety record has protected the community and saved the organization millions of dollars in the cost of insurance premiums.
The Gold Safety Award is earned when the lost time accident frequency rate is 80% better than the construction industry average, as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. LAUSD’s $25.3 billion New School Construction and Modernization Program provides safe and healthy neighborhood schools. To date, the district has completed 130 new schools and approximately 20,000 modernization projects.
