McKissack & McKissack provided document control and construction support services for Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) new sustainable utility plant that replaced the 50-year-old Central Utility Plant (CUP) and cogeneration facilities.
This design-build project provided LAX with a new 75,000 SF CUP that has a 20,000-ton cooling capacity, while maintaining undisturbed chilled and hot water flow to the existing terminals at all times during construction. The new facility is 25% more energy-efficient than the original CUP. Elements of the project included installation of state-of-the-art central digital control and fire alarm systems; new plant equipment, electric-driven centrifugal chillers, steam-driven chillers and gas-turbine-driven generators with heat-recovery steam generators; new maintenance shops and offices for plant personnel; new underground hot and cold water piping network; and a new 1.6 million-gallon thermal energy storage tank.
